Sermon Notes
1 Corinthians 12:1 (NIV) - 1 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.
WHAT ARE THE GIFTS OF THE SPIRIT?
1 Corinthians 12:1 (NIV) - 1 Now about the gifts of the Spirit, brothers and sisters, I do not want you to be uninformed.
1 Corinthians 12:4-6 (NIV)
4 There are different kinds of gifts, but the same Spirit distributes them.
5 There are different kinds of service, but the same Lord.
6 There are different kinds of working, but in all of them and in everyone it is the same God at work.
Gifts — charismata.
Service — diakonia.
Workings — energēmata.
1 Corinthians 12:7 (NLT) - A spiritual gift is given to each of us so we can help each other.
A spiritual gift is a grace-given ability through which the Holy Spirit works for the good of others.
SPIRITUAL GIFTS ARE NOT:
1. NATURAL TALENTS
SPIRITUAL GIFTS ARE NOT:
2. FOR THE ELITE FEW
SPIRITUAL GIFTS ARE NOT:
3. THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT
SPIRITUAL GIFTS ARE NOT:
4. SOMETHING TO FEAR
SPIRITUAL GIFTS ARE NOT:
5. A SPIRITUAL MATURITY BADGE
1 Corinthians 12:12 (NLT) - The human body has many parts, but the many parts make up one whole body. So it is with the body of Christ.
1 Corinthians 12:18 (NLT) - But our bodies have many parts, and God has put each part just where he wants it.
1 Corinthians 12:21-26 (NLT) - 21 The eye can never say to the hand, “I don’t need you.” The head can’t say to the feet, “I don’t need you.” 22 In fact, some parts of the body that seem weakest and least important are actually the most necessary. 23 And the parts we regard as less honorable are those we clothe with the greatest care. So we carefully protect those parts that should not be seen, 24 while the more honorable parts do not require this special care. So God has put the body together such that extra honor and care are given to those parts that have less dignity. 25 This makes for harmony among the members, so that all the members care for each other. 26 If one part suffers, all the parts suffer with it, and if one part is honored, all the parts are glad.
Motivational Gifts — Romans 12
Manifestation Gifts —1 Corinthians 12
Ministry Gifts — 1 Corinthians 14
Ministerial Gifts — Ephesians 4 (Gifts of Jesus)
1 Corinthians 12:7 (NIV) - 7 Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
1 Corinthians 12:8–11 (NIV) - 8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom, to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit, 9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit, 10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy, to another distinguishing between spirits, to another speaking in different kinds of tongues, and to still another the interpretation of tongues. 11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit, and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.
THE GIFTS ARE GIVEN, NOT OWNED
1 Corinthians 12:11 (NLT) - 11 It is the one and only Spirit who distributes all these gifts. He alone decides which gift each person should have.
THE DISCERNING GIFTS
WORD OF KNOWLEDGE - To know something specific without having learned it by natural means
John 3:34 (NIV) - “For the one whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for God gives the Spirit without limit.”
THE DISCERNING GIFTS
WORD OF WISDOM - A divine answer or solution for a particular event
THE DISCERNING GIFTS
DISCERNMENT OF SPIRITS - To be made aware of the presence of a demonic spirit
Acts 16:17 (NIV) - 17 She followed Paul and the rest of us, shouting, “These men are servants of the Most High God, who are telling you the way to be saved.”
Discerning of spirits isn't primarily about detecting hostility. It's about detecting the source when the content sounds right.
THE DECLARATIVE GIFTS
PROPHECY - A message of encouragement from God through a person.
1 Corinthians 14:3 (NIV) - 3 But the one who prophesies speaks to people for their strengthening, encouraging and comfort.
1 Corinthians 14:31 (NIV) - 31 For you can all prophesy in turn so that everyone may be instructed and encouraged.
THE DECLARATIVE GIFTS
TONGUES - A message from God in a language unknown to the person through whom the message comes.
Gift of tongues: A message directed to people — requires interpretation.
Grace of tongues: A prayer language directed to God — builds yourself up.
1 Corinthians 14:23 (NIV) - 23 So if the whole church comes together and everyone speaks in tongues, and inquirers or unbelievers come in, will they not say that you are out of your mind?
1 Corinthians 14:27–28 (NIV) - 27 If anyone speaks in a tongue, two—or at the most three—should speak, one at a time, and someone must interpret. 28 If there is no interpreter, the speaker should keep quiet in the church and speak to himself and to God.
THE DECLARATIVE GIFTS
INTERPRETATION OF TONGUES - Understanding and expressing the thought or intent of the message in tongues
1 Corinthians 14:5 (NIV) - 5 I would like every one of you to speak in tongues, but I would rather have you prophesy. The one who prophesies is greater than the one who speaks in tongues, unless someone interprets, so that the church may be edified.
THE DYNAMIC GIFTS
FAITH - A supernatural impartation of belief and confidence for a specific situation.
THE DYNAMIC GIFTS
GIFTS OF HEALINGS - Supernatural endowment of divine health.
THE DYNAMIC GIFTS
WORKING OF MIRACLES - Divine intervention that alters our natural circumstances.
1. Discover the gifts God has for you.
Romans 12:6 (NIV) - 6 We have different gifts, according to the grace given to each of us. If your gift is prophesying, then prophesy in accordance with your faith;
Psalm 139:13–16 (NIV) - 13 For you created my inmost being; you knit me together in my mother’s womb. 14 I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made; your works are wonderful, I know that full well. 15 My frame was not hidden from you when I was made in the secret place, when I was woven together in the depths of the earth. 16 Your eyes saw my unformed body; all the days ordained for me were written in your book before one of them came to be.
God’s design in us reveals God’s destiny for us.
2. Develop the gifts God has given you
2 Timothy 1:6 (NIV) - 6 For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God
3. Use the gifts God has given you
1 Peter 4:10 (NLT) - 10 God has given each of you a gift from his great variety of spiritual gifts. Use them well to serve one another.
